Hemp growers seek road to switch to veggie farming

HETAUDA, OCT 31 -

Marijuana farmers in remote areas of Makawanpur have said they will stop growing the banned crop and start vegetable farming if the government provides road access.

Without road, they have no access to market for selling vegetables, they told a police team deployed to destroy the marijuana crop recently.

“Marijuana dealers come to us and buy our produce. Such is not the case when it comes to vegetables,” said Saroj Rijal of Kalikatar VDC. Like Rijal, there are many people who grow cannabis in their land to the north-east of Makawanpur.

It took five days for the police team to destroy the Marijuana crop grown on nearly 58 hectares of land in VDCs including Kalikatar, Namtar and Bharta.

“Marijuana farming is thriving in places where there is no road access. Farmers say there is no point in growing vegetables without access to motor transport in the area,” said a police officer involved in the operation. He added that providing road access is the best way to combat cannabis cultivation in remote villages of the district, or else the villagers would continue growing the crop despite occasional interventions of law
