KATHMANDU, OCT 25 -
The Government of India has provided Rs. 345.73 million additional grant assistance to carry out ongoing embankment works in Bagmati, Lalbakeya and Kamala rivers under the preview of Joint Committee on Inundation and Flood Management (JCIFM).
Indian Ambassador to Nepal Jayant Prasad handed over the check of grant assistance to Minister for Irrigation Mahendra Prasad Yadav amidst a function at the ministry in Singha Durbar, today.
Previously, India has provided around Rs. 2.02 billion as grant assistance to carry out the embankment construction projects in the rivers. Of the total grant assistance, Rs. 608.5 million for Bagmati, Rs. 549.1 million for Lalkabaiya and Rs. 866 million was already spent.
Speaking at the function, Minister Yadav appraised the Indian Government and the people of India for the assistance extended for the projects and stressed that both the countries must work for timely and efficient flood management keeping in mind that remedial measures affect one another and should be done by mutual cooperation.
Minister Yadav expressed his confidence that other proposals including the Shallow tube well irrigation units would be implemented soon.
During the programme, Secretary at the ministry Bindra Hada Bhattarai stressed the importance of mutual cooperation for the meaningful taming of trans-boundary river related water disasters and thanked the Government of India for the grant assistance.
On the occasion, Ambassador Prasad said that different projects were being constructed with priority in the bordering areas as the rivers that flow India through Nepal have cut and inundated arable lands in the areas.
