BIPPA against Nepal: Khanal
KAVRE, OCT 25 -
Amid mixed reactions on the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal gnashed his teeth about the signing of BIPPA with India by Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, claiming that the pact is against national interests.
Speaking at a party programme in Kavre on Monday, he said this agreement could put Nepal’s nationality at stake in the name of promoting and protecting foreign investment.
“BIPPA is not needed for Nepal at present,” the UML chief said. “Such an agreement shouldn’t be signed before the completion of the peace process and constitution drafting and without powering up national economy.”
He said the government has created a situation in which the state has to compensate the industries “battered and vandalised by Maoist cadres”.
Khanal termed the government “a coalition of opportunists.” “This government cannot protect sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said, adding that his party would openly protest against the pact that would put the national sovereignty and integrity at risk.
