KATHMANDU, OCT 24 - Nepali Congress has decided to support the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA), signed between Nepal and India on Oct 21.

Speaking at an interaction organised by the Reporters Club in the Capital on Monday, NC senior leader Prakash Sharan Mahat affirmed that his party has supported the open market policy and would not protest the BIPPA as such agreements have been signed in the past as well.

Leader Mahat said  it was pointless to protest the agreement. He argued that the BIPPA was the necessity of present time to secure foreign investment in the country.

Speaking at the same programme, UCPN (Maoist) leader Dev Gurung said the agreement was futile in nature as it could displace national capital. He also alleged that the agreement was “anti-national.”

On the occasion, Senior Vice President of Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), Bhaskar Raj Rajkarnikar urged the political leaders not to make BIPPA a political issue.

Likewise, Nepal Chambers of Commerce Chairman Suresh Basnet viewed that the agreement could open a new chapter in welcoming Indian investment in Nepal.
