KATHMANDU, OCT 22 -

The heads of thematic committees of the Constituent Assembly have stepped up consultations to press top leaders for the promultation of the first constitution draft within November 30.

Such an initiative comes in the wake of prolonged statute deadlock as the Dispute Resolution Subcommittee has failed to make any headway owing to protests from the main opposition Nepali Congress. NC has been maintaining that the peace process should progress before decisions on contentious issues related to the new constitution.

On Saturday, chairpersons of the seven thematic committees out of 10 held discussions in the Capital in their effort to pressurise the major parties for finding a way-out of the current political impasse. During the talks, the participants stressed the need of piling pressure on the top leaders with the support of CA Chairman Subas Nembang.

“Extending the Constituent Assembly again under the present status wouldn't be welcomed by the people. We have agreed to seek clarifications from top leaders on their views and about the possible alternatives if the first statute draft can't be unveiled within the stipulated time,” said Binda Pandey, chairperson of Committee on Fundamental Rights and Directives Principles.

The CA committees have planned a meeting with Speaker Nembang after their next meeting on Monday. They have decided to maximise efforts for the full attendance of chairpersons of all thematic committees and chairperson of Constitutional Committee in the upcoming meeting to discuss on the current impasse.

The thematic committees have completed their work within the stipulated two-year deadline of the CA and are now staying idle as deliberations have been centered in the Constitutional Committee.
