MJF-L undecided over Bhandari’s resignation
KATHMANDU, OCT 18 -
Leaders of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik have failed to arrive at common view on the issue of resignation of their party leader and Defense Minister Sarat Singh Bhandari on Tuesday as well.
A meeting of the MJF-L, convened at the party head office in Sanepa, could not decide whether or not to call back Bhandari.
Following immense criticism from the opposition parties—Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML—Bhandari’s party has been holding internal consultations regarding the issue.
The defense minister is accused of making “anti-national” remark in public.
Earlier, speaking at a programme in the Captial, Bhandari had said that 22 Tarai districts could disintegrate themselves if they are not provided with due considerations.
MJF-L’s yesterday’s meeting had failed to decide on the matter even after eight hours of hectic talks.
Controversies surfaced during the meeting as the majority of the leaders in the meeting said Minister the party cannot recall Bhandari on the basis of one false statement.
Those MJF-L leaders who are against Bhandari’s resignation have been saying that the defense minister had not indented to make anti-national remark; it was just the media that twisted Bhandari’s statement.
However, the ruling UCPN (Maoist) and the opposition parties are in favour of Bhandari’s resignation.
According to sources, the leaders said that it has already been agreed among the ruling coalition and the opposition parties that Bhandari’s statement had a positive intension although his words were not. In such case, it would not be fair to call him back, the leaders reportedly argued in the meeting.
