Earthquake-hit schools yet to resume classes in Taplejung
TAPLEJUNG, OCT 17 -
More than a dozen government schools destroyed in the September 18 earthquake in Taplejung district are yet to resume classes owing to a lack of necessary infrastructure.
School authorities said that they were not able to resume classes due to the lack of infrastructure and open spaces as the buildings damaged in the quake have not been repaired and no alternative has been found yet. Despite notice that the school would reopen on October 12, Khampiyok Primary School at Surumkhim VDC-8 has not started classes for want of necessary infrastructure.
“Wide space is needed to hold 200 students but we cannot manage it,” said Principal Bimal Baniya. He expressed hope, though, that they would be able to resume classes soon.
The Lelep-based Phale Primary School, which was supposed to open after the Dashain festival, is also yet to resume classes.
Its three buildings were destroyed in the tremor. Meanwhile, representatives of the District Education Office have been accused of not visiting schools in many areas to collect data on the damage inflicted to schools. According to District Education Officer Rajkumar Bishwokarma, the office has been informed of 223 schools destroyed in the earthquake so far. He said data collection on the damage is still going on.
