Commission replaces committee to probe Faizan murder
Govt pledges bereaved family Rs 1 million
KATHMANDU, OCT 13 -
The Cabinet on Thursday formed a commission to investigate into the murder of Islam Association General Secretary Faizan Ahmad, by dissolving the previous committee chaired by Joint Attorney General Bishwo Bandhu Pokharel.
The newly formed commission will be coordinated by Supreme Court ex-Justice Rajendra Bhandari. AIG Naresh Gurung of Nepal Police and Deputy Attorney General Premraj Karki are other members of the commission which will furnish its report within a month.
After public outcry and backlash from the Muslim community of Nepal, the government on September 27 formed a committee to probe into Ahmad's murder. The now dissolved committee had SSP Manohar Rimal, Under Secretary at the Home Ministry Murariraj Sharma as members apart from the coordinator.
In a meeting with a delegation of 21 Muslim organizations in Nepal, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar on Thursday assured them a commission to probe into the murder. The Cabinet meeting also decided to provide Rs 1 million to Ahmad's family.
