KATHMANDU, OCT 12 -

Non-Resident Nepalis (NRN) celebrated NRN Day and engaged in charitable work on Tuesday in a prelude to the Fifth NRN Global Conference which starts Wednesday in Kathmandu.

NRN Day was observed with a renewed commitment to help fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the Nepali people and build a more prosperous Nepal by injecting more investment into the social and economic sectors. NRN Day is celebrated annually on Oct 11.

Earlier in the morning, the NRN community conducted pujas at Swayambhu and Pashupatinath besides cleaning the Pashupatinath Temple and inaugurating the Pashupati Kiriyaputri Bhawan built by the Phulkumari Mahato Memorial Trust.

The building will be used for carrying out after-death rituals by the public. Treasurer of the trust Julie Mahato said renovation of the Kiriyaputri premises and construction of the new building cost Rs 30 million.

Inaugurating the Kiriyaputri Bhawan, former Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) president Upendra Mahato urged the NRN community to work together to fulfil the dream of building a prosperous Nepal. “We can do a lot if we begin our work from today,” said Mahato. “We are capable with money, mind and ability to do any work and build a prosperous Nepal.”

NRNA President Dev Man Hirachan said that the NRNA with a network of three million people in 57 countries was directly and indirectly contributing to the country’s economic and social sectors. “Within a short span of time, our network has been strengthened and we are focused on injecting more investment into the country,” he said, adding that the NRNA was committed to moving forward by tying up with the Nepal government, NGOs and private players to boost investment.

NRNA Vice President Jiva Lamichhane said that the NRNA had been established with the aim of contributing to the country’s social and economic sectors, and appealed to the diaspora for more support. “I request the entire NRN community to increase their contribution to the economic and social sectors.”

According to treasurer Mahato, the construction of the Kiriyaputri Bhawan is the second phase of the project there. “Now that the building has been handed over, the third phase of renovation will begin soon. Under this phase, we will improve other infrastructure at the Kiriyaputri Bhawan,” she said.

Architect Nirman Shakya, who created the design of the building and the plan for reviving the ponds and other structures at Kiriyaputri, said, “The old building was completely torn down to build a new advanced one. Earlier, we had proposed a design for a two-storey building. But as that would have spoilt the view of the main temple of Pashupatinath, a one-storey building was approved.”

Later in the day, two interaction programmes entitled “Open University of Nepal Initiative” and “Empowering a Nation: Moving towards Gender Equality and Economic Development” were held.
