City cops to narrow Lainchaur footpaths

KATHMANDU, OCT 12 -

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) that began demolishing green islands and lane dividers at various places in the Capital a month ago has now started narrowing footpaths at Lainchaur area.

The MTPD, in collaboration with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), has begun road expansion, saying that the islands disturbed traffic. It has already cleared the islands from Tinkune, Minbhawan and Kalimati areas.

“The footpaths are being narrowed in only a few places,” said SP Jagat Man Shrestha, spokesperson for the Division. He also said the boundary wall of the Social Welfare Council at Lainchaur will be bulldozed in a few days to widen the Lainchour-Thamel road by five metres in the area.

The Thamel area is one of the most congested areas in the Valley.

Meanwhile, KMC’s wing, the Hanuman Dhoka Conservation Committee, is removing hoarding boards and street vendors from the New Road-Basantapur area.

Hari Kumar Shrestha of the committee said that the vendors will be permanently removed from the New Road area as soon as a project to install stainless steel bars to divide roads from the footpath is complete.

Meanwhile, the plan announced by the Department of Roads (DoR) in January to revive greenery and expand 27 square-km of the Ring Road is in limbo, thanks to the government’s reluctance in going ahead with the project.

The DoR had also proposed to improve all old main road networks connecting major destinations in the Valley.
