NC, UML talks positive
KATHMANDU, OCT 11 - Informal talks between the two major opposition parties—Nepali Congress and CPN-UML—concluded here in the Capital on Tuesday with both parties expressing optimism about concluding the peace process.
Talking to journalists after the talks, Congress General Secretary Krishna Sitaula hoped the big three political parties would sit together to chart out a course to conclude the peace process at the earliest as the UCPN (Maoist) have depicted flexibility.
On the other hand, UML leader Bhim Rawal said there is no situation to trust the Maoists though the talks were positive and hopes about the possibility of conclusion of the peace process have gone up.
“Taking into account the flexibility depicted by the Maoists, Congress is confident that an agreement to conclude the peace process would be forged very soon,” said Sitaula. His response was based on Monday’s talks between the NC and Maoists.
However, no formal discussion was held on sticky issues such as number of combatants to be integrated, modality, ranking and rehabilitation package.
UML leader Rawal remarked that there is no environment to have complete trust upon the Maoists though they have shown flexibility, given their dubious track record of departing from agreed position during implementation.
“The Maoists had agreed on various issues with UML before singing the pact with Madhesi Morcha to form the current government, but later moved backward during the formation of government,” said Rawal, “No serious discussions were held between Maoists and UML in recent times.”
The UML leader, however, said the talks are moving in positive direction.
