Dashain ends
KATHMANDU, OCT 11 -
Hindus across the country bid goodbye to this year's Dashain festival by celebrating the Kojagrat Purnima on Tuesday.
The festival that started with Ghatasthapana on September 28 concluded on the day of Purnima with the worship of Goddess Mahalaxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
Traditionally, devotees celebrate the day holding a nightlong vigil with homes lighted up for the goddess to visit them.
Goddess Mahalaxmi, according to Hindu mythology, is believed to roam around the earth on the night of Kojagrat (who is awake) to see people who stay awake to worship her.
On the same day, early in the morning, devotees dispose of remains of the offerings made to the goddess and also the remains of the plants sown on the first day of Dashain, in the nearest river ending the festival.
Meanwhile, Buddhists from the Newar community clean their chaityas and stupas and perform Buddha Puja with the belief that Swoyambhu appeared on the full moon day.
