KATHMANDU, OCT 10 - Taking a cue from India’s anti-corruption campaigner Anna Hazare, Lawmaker Baban Singh took to an indefinite hunger strike from Monday, demanding an end to corruption and political violence in the district.

Singh, who was elected from Rautahat constituency-1 in the 2008 CA election as an independent candidate despite being in the ‘most wanted list’ of police, resorted to the fast-unto-death at the premises of Rautahat District Administration Office, putting forth a charter of eight-point demands including investigation into rampant irregularities in the district.

Lawmaker Singh informed that he will continue with the hunger strike unless the political corruption in various government bodies were curbed. He claimed that a sum of Rs 62, 00,000 allocated in the last fiscal year for maternity promotion allowance was misappropriated.

Civil society and Federation of Nepali Journalists have expressed solidarity with his protest.

The agitating lawmaker, who was dragged into controversy for his alleged involvement in various criminal activities, said he was forced to resort to the strike after his repeated clamour in the House towards the same fell on deaf ears.

Lawmaker Singh told media persons that he was inspired by India’s anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare to stage the hunger strike with a determination to end corruption, political violence and growing anarchic activities.

Contrary to the public perceptions, Singh said he has accepted the non-violence principle of Mahatma Gandi.

Singh, a resident of Brahmaputra VDC-1 in the district, had won the elections while he was still underground, garnering 9201 votes. The lawmaker, who was charged with various crimes in India, was suspected to be behind the 2006 bombing at Tripureshwor in the Capital.
