Statue looted from monastery

HUMLA, OCT 09 -

A group of unidentified armed persons has looted a precious statue of Lord Buddha and other valuables from the Khor Gumba in Torpa Village of Humla district.

The statue, “Sange Menlha”, weighing 10 kg is also recognised by the Department of Archaeology. The group looted millions from the monastery including the statute, five other valuable statues, cash and other valuables, a local, Chhapsang Lama, said.

On August 31, at least 10 armed men identifies themselves as members of the “Karnali Tiger Group” and looted the monastery, Lama said. According to DSP Him Bahadur Lama, the group cut off electricity connection to the Gumba and threatened the monks before fleeing with the valuables.

The border police were immediately informed of the incident, the DSP said.

Various TV channels, including the National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, have broadcast a documentary ‘The Magic Mountain’ based on the “Sange Menlha.”

Police have launched a manhunt, Chief District Officer Bed Prasad Kharel said.
