KATHMANDU, SEP 27 -

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, in collaboration with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has started demolishing lane dividers at various places in

the Capital.

Arguing that the islands had disrupted vehicular movement by creating bottleneck, the police started the demolition work at Tinkune. It plans to do away with around half a dozen such islands existing in Minbhawan, Baneshwor and Kalimati. “The traffic islands have caused congestions,” said SP Jagat Man Shrestha, spokesperson for the Division. “We are sure our step will ease vehicular movement to some extent.”

Police have also started process to seek approval from authorities concerned to narrow down footpath area at New Baneshwor and Lainchaur to widen the road. They have asked the government to demolish the boundary wall of Social Welfare Council at Lainchaur. The move is crucial to widening the road there.

Police say traffic movement from Lainchaur to Thamel can improve significantly if the road near the Council is widened by five metres. The area is among places suffering worst traffic jams in the Valley. Traffic police have started work also to designate 14 new zebra crossings in places where pedestrian flow is high.
