KATHMANDU, SEP 26 - Despite his repeated commitments not to meddle in the bureaucratic affairs, Home Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar understandably directed the Nepal Police Headquarters to transfer Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajendra Shrestha in place of Kathmandu SP Kedar Rijal.

The move comes hours after Islamic Association General Secretary Ahijan Ahamed was shot dead in front of Tri Chandra Campus at Ghanta ghar in the Capital on Monday.

Shrestha was serving in the Nepal Police Special Task Force.

The Home Ministery had transferred 30 SSPs on Sunday.

The ministry said Rijal's failure to provide security in Kathmandu was the reason for the transfer. The decision was taken in such haste that it seemed the hammer on Rijal's chair was long overdue.

Home Minister Gachhadar has swallowed a lot of fire of late for his failure to live up to his promise of not meddling in the bureaucracy and transfer of officers. Speculation is rife that Rijal's move to arrest one Ganesh Lama some months ago actually led to the transfer. SP Rajendra Shrestha from the Special task Force at the Police Headquarters will replace Rijal as the Kathmandu police chief.
