Dept teams are Real champs

KATHMANDU, SEP 25 -

Athletes belonging to Nepal Army (NA) grabbed nine out of the ten positions in the men’s marathon, while Armed Police Force (APF) dominated the women’s category at the Fifth Kathmandu Real Marathon on Saturday.

Rajendra Bhandari won the men’s title, while Krishneswori Sintakala APF finished first in the men’s and women’s category.

Winner of the third edition Bhandari clocked 2:33:16 hrs to complete the race. Likewise, Sintakala timed 3:20:14 hrs. Both the winners bagged a purse of Rs 100,000 each.

Bhandari’s club mate Uttam Khatri came second and Krishna Basnet settled for third. Khatri made it in 2: 34:32 hrs, followed by Basnet in 2:24: 44 hrs. The win fethced Khatri and Basnet Rs 50,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.

 Likewise, Purna Bahadur Tamang and champion Arjun Dhakal came fourth and fifth respectively. In the women’s category, Sonujaya Rai of APF and Saraswoti Khadka Rai of NA

finished second and third respectively. Rai finished in 3:33: 14 hrs to pocket Rs 50,000 and Khadka Rai touched the finishing line in 3:40:16 hrs to get Rs 20,000. Similarly, the men’s and women’s half-marathon titles went to Hom Lal Shrestha of NA and Brinda Dhanke Shrestha of APF. Shrestha finished the race in 1:12:53 hrs. Meanwhile, Dhanke Shrestha completed finished in 1:32:32 hrs.

In the remaining categories - 5km open women Kanchi Maya Koju won the 5km women’s open category, 5 km men’s open went to Kalyan Baniya ,  Sagita Khadka took the 5km school girls title, Khadka, 5km school boys Dipesh Somai, wheelchair women Jyoti Dhakal reigned supreme.

Likewise, Krishna Raj Chaudhary defended the title in men’s wheelchair.

The race flagged from Tripureshwor and went around Soalteemod, Kalanki, Ekantakuna, Satdobato, Jawalakhel, Kupandol, Thapathali, Anamnagar, Kamaladi and Durbarmang before ending at Tripureshwor.

Participants from different age groups and people from all walks of life, including the best runners of Nepal competed in the race.

The slogan for this year’s race was “Run Today for Better Nepal Tomorrow”.
