KATHMANDU, SEP 22 - Minister for Information and Communications, Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta on Thursday challenged the Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML and Vice Chairman Mohan Baidya camp of the UCPN (Maoist) to prove that the four-point agreement was anti-national.

Minister Gupta’s challenge comes at a time when the leaders of NC, UML and Maoist Baidya faction have been expressing strong disapproval of the four-point pact signed between Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) and UCPN (Maoist) before the formation of new government.

Speaking at a programme attended by all-party leaders in the Reporter’s Club today, Minister Gupta, who is also the chairman of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Ganatantrik, challenged the dissenting leaders to hold a public meeting and prove how the four-point pact was anti-national and posed threat of “Sikkm-isation.”

Instead, the act of marginalising the Madhes that is home to half the population of Nepali would do not good to nationality, he argued.

Claiming that the NC and UML had also supported the four-point pact prior to the formation of new government, Gupta alleged the parties threw up venomous remarks such as “Sikkim-isation” and “anti-national” out of desperation for having to stay out of the government.

Saying that the four-point pact was endorsed by the Maoist Standing Committee meeting and was signed in the presence of Baidya and Maoist General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa, who is considered close to Baidya and echoing him on the issue, Minister Gupta remarked that serious charges have been leveled against the four-point agreement due to the failure on the Maoists’ part to settle its internal differences.

“The NC and the UML had agreed on the four-point but we signed it with the Maoists citing the peace process could not be completed on their leadership,” said Gupta. “The dissenting faction of the Maoists had also supported the agreement while the pact was inked.”

The allegations against the four-point pact were against the political policy and discipline, he added.

Saying that the allegations have further strengthened the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha—an alliance of five Madhes-based parties, leader Gupta claimed that the Madhesi people have also supported the Morcha.

“This incident has rather united the Madhes, Morcha and the government,” remarked the information minister.
