Red sandalwood found in ambulance
KATHMANDU, SEP 22 -
Police have confiscated four red sandalwood timbers being smuggled in an ambulance from Jagati of Bhaktapur.
The sandalwood timbers were found in a trunk inside the ambulance operated by Shri Bhairav Kunda Yuva Club of Tatopani, Sindhupalchowk, during a security check at Jagati at 12:45 am on Wednesday.
“Initially we spotted a trunk inside the ambulance, exactly beneath where the patient was sleeping. Upon searching, we confiscated the contraband sandalwood inside the trunk,” said SP Narayan Singh Khadka. The ambulance, which had brought the patient from Sindhupalchowk to Dhulikhel for treatment, had been taken to Kathmandu by the driver for ‘maintenance’.
The police have also taken driver Sangbu Sherpa, 23, and the so called patient Syangbu Sherpa, 34, both Sindhupalchowk residents, into custody.
The driver has told police that the patient, who reportedly came to Kathamndu for follow-up, was not involved in the crime and was unaware of it. But, police say the situation
may be fishy and the patient may also be at fault.
The sandalwood and the Sherpa duo have been handed to District Forest Office Bhaktapur.
