Five women killed in landslide
BAGLUNG, SEP 22 -
Five women died and 13 others were injured in a landslide at Sanghukhola in Resh VDC-3, Baglung, on Thursday. The incident occurred while the victims were clearing a blocked irrigation canal.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Uma Prasad Chaturbedi, Pabitra Thapa, 40, Indra Thapa, 21, Bali Thapa, 66, Bijuli Thapa, 30, and Harikala Thapa, 37, died in the landslide. Three victims were buried to death on the spot while two others died on their way to hospital.
Police personnel and the villagers reached the incident site immediately and rescued the victims. The injured were taken to Dhaulagiri Zonal Hospital. Two of the seriously injured-Jhupa Thapa and Sushma Thapa-were later rushed to Pokhara for the further treatment.
A group of 18 women had been working to clear the irrigation canal which was blocked while digging rural road earlier. "We were about to start our work after taking lunch. At the very time the landmass just above the canal caved in," said Krishna Maya Thapa who survived the incident.
