KATHMANDU, SEP 22 - Sher Bahadur Deuba faction of the Nepali Congress (NC), which has been on a hunger strike against the party’s decision to dissolve the leadership of its sister organisations, on Thursday decided to extend their pressure campaigns without hampering the party.

The party Central Committee meeting on Tuesday had endorsed the proposal with a majority to dissolve the leadership of the sister organisations— Nepal Student’s Union, Tarun Dal, Nepal Women’s Association and Nepal Trade Union Congress— despite strong opposition from Deuba faction. Deuba faction immediately boycotted the meeting after party President Sushil Koirala tabled the proposal of General Secretary Prakash Man Singh to dissolve the party’s sister wings.

A meeting convened at Deuba’s residence decided to continue a “restrained pressure approach” against the decision, Central Committee member Shankar Bhandari said. “The undemocratic decision made by the president has to be scrapped as soon as possible. Our protest would continue until president [Sushil Koirala] creates a trustworthy environment,” he said.

“This is a grave issue, so we have decided to call all district presidents for discussion,” said Bhandari. He said that they want the issue to be discussed in all the levels of the party.

Stating that President Koirala is also ready to review his decision, Bhandari said that the hunger strike would continue until a concrete decision on the issue was made. “Leaders are on a hunger strike. We have to consider about their health as well. We are not competing with any other party. The president has to create a trustworthy environment within the party,” said Bhandari.
