Sudan scam: Rethink bail decision, CIAA urges apex court
KATHMANDU, SEP 21 - The CIAA has requested the Supreme Court to reconsider its direction to the Special Court to reduce the bail amount of those accused in the Sudan scam.
Instead, the CIAA has urged the court to expedite the hearing on the case by sending the accussed in judicial custody.
CIAA's request follows the apex court direction to the Special Court to produce documents related to the cases of three IGPs--Om Bikram Rana, Hem Bahadur Gurung and Ramesh Chanda Thakuri--and local broker Shambhu Bharati, who had posted millions in bail.
"We sent a letter to the Supreme Court requesting it to not reduce the bail amount as it was set as per their involvement in the Sudan scam. The court is rather urged to complete the hearing process by taking the accused into custody," a highly placed CIAA source said.
The Special Court had set Rs 50 million bail for Gurung, Rs 70 million for Thakuri and Rs 150 million for Bharati and Rana for allegedly gobbling up Rs 290 million while purchasing Armoured Personnel Carriers for the Nepali peacekeeping mission in Sudan, Darfur.
Former police officials accused in the scam have lodged petitions in the Supreme Court arguing that the bail amount were unreasonably high.
