Seven dead in Rolpa landslide

ROLPA, SEP 17 - At least seven people were killed and over a dozen injured when their houses were hit by landslides triggered by torrential rainfall in Ruinibang bazaar in Rolpa district in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Six houses, some of them lodges, were buried by the landslides.

According to police, at least 18 persons who were trapped in their houses following the collapse were rescued alive. The security personnel have been digging to reach the remaining dead bodies.

Bodies of a woman, said to be wife of one local Tulbahadur BK, and his  son have been pulled out. The identification of the other deceased have not been ascertained yet.

Additional security personnel from both Nepal Police and Nepal Army have reached the incident site for rescue operation, police said.

As some of the buildings struck by the landslide were lodges, it has been suspected that some of the deceased could be guests residing at the lodges .

A local health worker, Amrit Gharti, said they rushed for the rescue operation as soon as they learned about the tragedy.

The houses belonging to locals Lal Bahadur Gharti, Chandra Budhathoki, Hom Khadka and Kamala Budhathoki were buried by the landslides.

Police Inspector Badri Pandey said the security personnel aided by locals have been trying to complete the rescue as soon as possible.

Pandey said landslides could have taken place in other places of the districts as it has been witnessing heavy rainfall for the past few days.
