Beneath Everest listed for Milano film festival
KATHMANDU, SEP 17 - The documentary ‘Beneath Everest-Nepal Reborn’, directed by Tulsi Bhandari has been selected for the Milano Film Festival to be held on September 9 -11 in Milan, Italy.
The film had stirred a controversy last December after filmmaker and journalist Ajay Siwakoti filed a case against Bhandari claiming that his documentary had copied three minute footages of his documentaries— ‘Jhalak’ and ‘Andolan Jaari Chha’. Siwakoti had made these documentaries in 2003 and 2004 to promote the People’s Movement II.
Bhandari had defended that he used the footages with the permission of Collective Campaign for Peace, a human rights organisation that was entrusted with keeping Siwakoti’s documentaries.
Bhandari’s documentary is about Nepal’s decade-long armed conflict in which over 10,000 people lost their lives. The film, according to the Milano Film Festival website, recounts this process from the peak of violence to the transition to democracy. The film has been screened in over 35 places in and out of the country. Bhandari, who studied Social Work and Public Administration in the US, has been living there.
