KATHMANDU, SEP 14 -

Tension ran high at Tokha Bazaar in the outskirts of Kathmandu on Monday night after the Metropolitan police arrested three hooligans for attacking people with a bottle during Indra Jatra celebrations.

Around 1,000 irate locals attacked police personnel deployed from the Metropolitan Police Sector, Budhanilkantha, after the latter arrested Ram Shrestha, Man Maharjan and Krishna Dangol for their alleged involvement in

the attack.

Additional forces from Maharajgunj and Gongabu were sent to the area to bring the situation under control.

According to DSP Jagannath Pokhrel, the chief of the Metropolitan Sector, Maharajgunj, six police personnel and an equal number of locals sustained injuries in the clash.

The locals also vandalised two police vans, burnt two motorcycles and overturned one bus.

Pokhrel said the police had to fire teargas shells in the wee hours of Tuesday after the irate locals went berserk.

“The teargas shells were necessary as the mass turned violent,” Pokhrel said.

The situation is now under control, according to the metro police.
