ILAM, SEP 13 - Despite repeated pledges by the party’s top leadership to keep party unity intact, UCPN (Maoist) cadres close to the establishment faction on Tuesday stopped party Secretary CP Gajurel from conducting a programme in Ilam district headquarters. They argued that the party secretary should not be involved in factional politics.

The incident follows the vows, at a recent function in Gorkha district,  by the top three Maoists leaders who lead three different ideologies in the party—Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Vice Chairman and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Vice Chairman Mohan Baidya—to take the party ahead in unison.

The cadres close to the establishment faction—loyal to Chairman Puahpa Kamal Dahal—prevented Secretary Gajurel from organising a programme, saying that he tried to meet only the cadres of Maoist Limbuwan State Committee, who they said are close to hardliner Vice Chairman Baidya. Gajurel had arrived in Ilam at around 12 this afternoon.

The agitated cadres snatched the keys of Gajurel’s vehicle when it arrived at the first division cantonment of Maoist combatants.

The establishment faction cadres gathered at State Committee Office after learning about Gajurel’s visit. The disgruntled cadres obstructed the programme to be organised at a hotel in Buspark. “Gaurel is the secretary of the party, not any faction,” said district secretary Ram Rai, “We won’t allow the gathering of any specific group except the party.”

Rai said they were compelled to halt the programme as it was going to be a gathering of a particular faction.

Gajurel was stuck in the hotel until late afternoon after his vehicle keys were seized.

Hundreds of party cadres from surrounding districts including Panchthar, Dhankuta, Terhathum and Taplejung were gathered to attend the function.

However, Maoist district joint-secretary Kancha Lawati said the programme could not take place at the scheduled venue following a huge turn out of the cadres though it was said to be state committee level programme.

The hard-line faction within the Maoists including Secretary Gajurel have been expressing dissatisfaction with the establishment after the government handed over the keys to arms containers to the Special Committee.
