PLA fighters waiting for integration with bated breath
“We are the agent of change and that shouldn't be forgotten in the first place”
CHITWAN, SEP 11 - Despite the Maoist hardline faction getting on its high horse over keys to the containers holding their weapons, People's Liberation Army (PLA) combatants camping in various cantonments appear eager to see an early end to their cantonement life.
The PLA fighters cantonned at Sangram and Shaktikhor were delighted by the positive vibes on the integration of issue.
“Number doesn't matter much during the integration, it's the modality and the rank harmonisation that is of foremost importance,” said Janak Bahadur Shrestha, sub-commander at the Shaktikhor cantonment. “We are the agent of change and that shouldn't be forgotten in the first place.”
Shrestha also took a dig at party leaders who have slowly started disparaging the 10 years long war and have pushed the peace process, chiefly the integration and rehabilitation of combatants, in a difficult situation.
Some fear that they might again remain in obscurity like in the years after the signing of Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA).
A PLA combatant, who is taking English language class at the Sangram cantonment, vented his frustration, saying that it's been years waiting for something to happen about their rehabilitation and other issues, but to no avail. “We have fought the war and now we have to be settled in a dignified position,” he said requesting anonymity for the fear that he might get into trouble for his statement.
Though the brigade commander at the Sangram cantonment Hira Lal Chaudhary (Bajra) didn't want to speak much about the issues, he, however, said that they welcome the change seen at the recent times.
The commanders were also reluctant to speak about the ongoing bickering between the top Maoist leaders over the key handover issue.
“I've had a bullet in my hip and is now slowly recuperating. Many of my colleagues share the same fate. So, it's a prime responsibility of our leaders to see an early resolution to our fate,” said Surya Bahadur Khadka, a PLA at the Shaktikhor cantonment, adding that he is hopeful that their leaders will work hard for their settlement.
