Combatants, arms yet to reach cantonments
KATHMANDU, SEP 11 -
All the combatants and the weapons used for the security of the UCPN (Maoist) leaders have not yet reached the cantonment sites despite last month's formal decision of the prime minister-headed Special Committee on the Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist Combatants to end the dual security.
According to a source at the Special Committee Secretariat, 11 combatants and 13 weapons that were used to provide security to senior Maoist leaders are yet to be returned to the cantonment sites. Amid differences within the Maoist party over the decision to end the dual security system, the Special Committee on August 4 had asked the combatants to return to cantonments within a week.
Of the 107 combatants deployed for the security of Maoist leaders, 96 have reported to the cantonments and 81of the 97 weapons were received at the Shaktikhor cantonment site.
The returned weapons are yet to be stored in the containers and are in possession of the combatants, claimed the source.
Of the arms that are yet to be returned, the PLA deserters who joined the Matrika Yadav-led CPN Maoist took away three weapons and the the Ministry of Home Affairs reportedly took control of three small guns assigned for the security of Maoist Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya, Kul Prasad KC and PLA commander Hemanta Prasad Oli.
