Cabinet makes vital decisions; taskforce for relief package

KATHMANDU, SEP 08 - The government has formed a four-member taskforce to make suggestions for the relief programmes to be announced by the government aimed at supporting the disadvantaged lot.

A Cabinet meeting held in Singha Durbar on Thursday decided to form the taskforce comprising Minister of Physical Planning and Works Hridayesh Tripathi, Energy Minister Post Bahadur Bogati, Minister for Health and Population Rajendra Mahato and Finance Minister Barsa Man Pun.

The government decided to put off its plan to bring out the relief programmes for Friday after the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM), a key partner of the current coaliation government, objected to the proposal. The government was to announce the relief programmes for today.

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai presented the proposal of relief programmes at the Cabinet meeting.

Vital appointments

Also today, the Cabinet appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha as the government spokesperson.

Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has appointed Ram Rijan Yadav and Devendra Poudel as his Press Advisor and Political Advisor respectively.

Similarly, Dipendra Bahadur Chhetri has been appointed as the Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission (NPC). Janak Shah and Shiva Kumar Rai have been named the NPC members.

The vacant post of foreign secretary, after the retirement of Madan Kumar Bhattarai on age basis, will be filled by Durga Bhattarai as a caretaker foreign secretary.

The Cabinet has also decided to withdraw the bill aimed at making the Public Service Comission inclusive.  The bill--under consideration at the Legislature-Parliament--was taken back to make necessary amendment.

Similarly, the compulsion of sporting national attire--Daura Surual--implemented by former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal would also be rectified.

Likewise, the Cabinet endorsed the recommendation of selection panel to confer the outstanding award of civil service on Surya Prasad Gautam, controller of SLC exams.
