ANNFSU calls off strike in West after deal with govt
KATHMANDU, SEP 07 - Students aligned to All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), UML student wing, withdrew the strike called in western districts following an agreement with the government on Wednesday.
The agitating students had enforced general strike in Banke, Bardiya and Dang districts on Tuesday protesting against the police administration’s failure to arrest the group involved in the murder of Nepalgunj-based student Bishnu Bikram Shahi.
The ANNFSU decided to lift the strike after a meeting with Home Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar today, ANNFSU Secretary Saroj Yadav informed.
Yadav, however, said, “If the understanding reached with the home minister is not implemented then we would again enforce bandh after three days.”
In the agreement, the government has agreed to bear the expenses of late Shah’s funeral and treatment expense of those injured during Tuesday’s police intervention, release those arrested during Tuesday’s demonstration and to implement the agreements signed in the past with the local administration.
ANNFSU-aligned students including Chairman Madhav Dhungel were present in the meeting.
The ANNFSU had enforced the strike in the western districts today as well saying the security personnel intervened in Tuesday’s demonstration.
