Banke police station attacked
KOHALPUR, AUG 31 -
An unidentified armed group attacked Kohalpur Area Police Office in Banke district late on Tuesday night. The assailants carrying sophisticated weapons opened indiscriminate shots targeting the police office. However, there was no human casualty in the incident.
Police said that the assailants came on a motorcycle and opened fire from a sub-machine gun (SMG). Police personnel on sentry duty maintained restraint and did not open fire in retaliation though the group opened 15 rounds.
According to Superintendent of Police, Dinesh Amatya, 15 SMG cartridges were recovered from the premises of the police office. "The assailants have not been identified yet. The investigation into the incident is underway," he said.
Amatya, who reached the incident site soon after the attack, dispelled any doubts on armed groups for their involvement in the attack. "We do not have any doubts on armed group members in the incident since we have not found such modern weapon from them till date," he said.
A high level police source suspected that the attack could have been carried out by security personnel defecting with sophisticated weapons. "The assailants targeted the police office. It could be an act of revenge," the source said.
