KATHMANDU, AUG 30 -

New PM Baburam Bhattarai has started giving shape to a fresh team of prime ministerial aides. Though an official announcement is yet to be made, names of a few likely faces to be included in Bhattarai’s team of aides have come to light.

Ganga Shrestha, a Maoist leader, was picked the personal secretary to the PM on Monday. According to sources in the Maoist party, Devendra Poudel and Hemanta Prakash Oli, both close to Bhattarai, are likely to become the Chief Political Advisers.

Politburo member Ram Karki, Hira Bahadur Thapa, former foreign relations adviser to former PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal, former ambassador Bhekh Bahadur Thapa and former ambassador Bishnu Hari Nepal are emerging as foreign relations advisers. Karki is serving at the foreign department cell of the party. He was named Nepal’s ambassador to France in 2009. The Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government had refused to appoint him following the regime change. Likewise, a section of the party wants to appoint diplomat Bhekh Bahadur Thapa the foreign relations adviser.  Also, Nepal, the former ambassador to Japan, is also emerging as a favoured candidate for the post.

The editor of Maoist mouthpiece Janadesh weekly, Mana Rishi Dhital, and Hari Adhikari, an official at the Maoist party headquarters are likely to become press advisers. “As of now, the picture is not clear and these positions will be filled most likely on Tuesday,” said Bishow Deep Pandey, an aide to the PM.
