Protests render city transport grid defunct
KATHMANDU, AUG 30 -
The traffic in the country’s Capital went haywire on Monday due to protests, sit-ins and demonstrations related to a new constitution.
The obstruction in vehicular movement since noon hit commuters and pedestrians passing New Baneshwor.
A rally led by Kamal Thapa’s Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal from Babarmahal at around 1 pm occupied the highway in front of the CA hall till the evening. The only royalist party in Nepal has demanded fresh CA elections and a referendum to decide whether or not the country needed monarchy.
The traffic bottlenecks on alternative routes
created jams for several hours. “The bus was stuck
for half an hour between Thapagaun and Hanumansthan besides being obstructed at several places on my way to Kamaladi,” said Amir Gautam. “It took almost one-and-a-half hours for me to reach Kamaladi
from Baneshwor—a 20 minute journey on a day without such disturbances.”
According to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, vehicles heading towards Baneshwor from Thapathali, Putalisadak and Koteshwor were returned.
Small vehicles from Bhaktapur, Airport and Balkumari were diverted towards Airport and Balkumari while those from Ratnapark, Kalanki and Jawalakhel were sent to Thapathali. However, vehicles were allowed to pass via Minbhawan later in the day. Civil society and women’s pressure groups and political organisations such as former parliamentarians’ have been demonstrating near the CA hall to press parties to deliver peace and constitution on time.
