Apex court verdict on nat’l dress draws flak
KATHMANDU, AUG 22 - The Supreme Court (SC) decision to make wearing Daura Suruwal and Topi mandatory for government staffers has been protested in the Legialture-Parliament.
UML lawmaker Gopal Thakur expressed his dissatisfaction at the SC decision citing it was taken without considering the changing political situation. He raised objection to the SC ruling in which the apex court defined—Daura, Suruwal and Topi—as the country's national dress.
“The Supreme Court’s decision that designated Daura, Suruwal and Topi as the national dress was ill-timed in view of the changed context,” said Thakur speaking at the zero-hour. “Let the decision against the interim constitution be scrapped.”
Meanwhile, the UML-aligned Loktantrik Madhesi Organisation, in a press conference organised in the Capital, vented ire at the apex court verdict, saying the dress representing a particular ethnic group and its culture cannot be designated as the national dress.
At the press conference, the UML-aligned organisation alleged that the SC verdict represented the 240-year-old tyrannical attitude. The participants claimed that the decision won’t be implemented as the national dress does not represent a true identity of the multicultural and multiethnic country.
