Prices of daily essentials skyrocket in Bajura
AUG 22 -
The prolonged obstruction of an artery has skyrocketed prices of daily essentials in Bajura district.
With vehicular disruption along 58-km Sanfebagar-Martadi, the only road linking Bajura with Tarai districts continuing for the past two months, prices of daily commodities and construction materials have steepened.
Monsoon floods and landslides in several places have rendered the road inoperable. Transporters and consumers have been calling for an early repair.
Prices of rice, pulse, salt, sugar, edible oil, kerosene and other daily commodities have increased by more than 40 percent within the past two months.
“The per kg price of sugar has reached Rs 100 from Rs 70 two months ago,” said Tula Bahadur Rokaya, treasurer of Bajura Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In the wake of continued road blockade, local traders have been transporting goods with the help of porters all way from Sanfebagar (Achham) to Martadi walking two days.
A tractor used to charge just Rs 4 to transport one kg of goods to Martadi from Sanfebagar, but now traders are paying Rs 30 to carry the same weight.
According to businessmen, the prices of daily essentials may further go up in Dashain and Tihar as the road may not be back in service before the festivals.
