KATHMANDU, AUG 18 - Even as the major political parties have intensified negotiations to form a new government, Civil Society representatives on Thursday urged the leaders of major political parties to form a consensus government but not a majority.

Speaking at a programme organised by Martin Chautari in the Capital today, the civic leaders stressed on the need for the formation of a national consensus government. They even urged the political leaders to rise above their vested interests.

Civil Society leader Devendra Raj Pandey said the civil society would not lend it support to the government if the parties formed a majority government.

Saying that the certain persons under the patronage of parties and government have been misusing the public properties, Pandey urged the leaders of major political parties to take steps to stop such activities immediately.

“Criminal activities have been thriving day after day, the government should stop it,” he said.

Likewise, Sundar Mani Dixit claimed that certain criminal and anarchic activities would come down if a consensus government is formed.

Another leader Khangendra Sangraula said the formation of a consensus government is the need of the hour whether it under the leadership of Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahdur Deuba or UCPN (Maoist) Vice Chairman Dr. Baburam Bhattari.

He further remarked that the peace process would be concluded only if a package deal was forged on all the issues relating to the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants.
