Parsa government offices have millions of rupees in electricity dues

Many government offices in Parsa district have failed to pay their electricity bills for long. Most of these offices are under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.
Birgunj Power Distribution Centre has blacklisted three government offices for their failure to clear the power dues.
Family Planning Association of Nepal, Tuberculosis Prevention Office and a branch unit of Distrcit Public Health Office have accumulated arrears of Rs 1.43 million, Rs 14,303 and Rs 29,683, respectively, over the last two years. The office has issued a one week ultimatum to these offices to pay up the outstanding dues.
Narayani Sub Regional Hospital, which owes Rs 414,704 to the electricity office, has managed to stay out of the blacklist, as it has been paying small sums on a regular basis.
Nineteen offices under the Ministry of Health in Parsa have a combined debt of Rs 7.9 million. Thirty-three schools as well as the District Education Office have Rs 3.67 million of unsettled electricity bills. While, offices under the Home Ministry have Rs 2.84 million of outstanding bills. The Birgunj jail has Rs 2 million to pay to the electricity office, while the District Administration Office and District Police Office have also failed to clear their electricity bills.
Under the Ministry of Local Development, 20 government offices have unpaid electricity bills amounting to Rs 4.1 million. As many as 28 offices under the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Water Resources have Rs 7.6 million of unsettled power bills.
The state-owned power utility Nepal Electricity Authority faces an unprecedented crisis with its accumulated losses being more than Rs 19 billion. In order to recover dues from consumers, that include households, industries and government offices, the energy minister has cut power supply to two ministries while other reform plans have been initiated.
