KATHMANDU, AUG 13 - As the national politics is likely to take a new course following debates over the resignation of Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala is under immense pressure to pick senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba as the party's prime ministerial candidate.

Not only the Deuba camp but his own supporters are now piling  pressure on Koirala to field Deuba--instead of Parliamentary Party (PP) leader Ram Chandra Poudel-- as the PM candidate.

Over a dozen Central Working Committee members including those from the Koirala camp on Saturday evening decided to pile pressure on the president to take a win-win option at the earliest.

General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula, who is considered a close Koirala aide, is now lobbying openly for Deuba's candidacy.

“It is clearly seen that pressure has been mounting on Koirala to field Deuba as the party's PM candidate,” said CWC member Gagan Thapa.

Besides Sitaula, CWC members loyal to Koirala like Arjun Narsingh KC, Kul Bahadur Gurung, Bal Dev Majgaiya and Purusottam Basnet have joined the Deuba camp.

Last week, Koirala also felt the need to replace Poudel with Deuba as PP leader after the Deuba camp started collecting signatures of a majority of lawmakers. Koirala had even asked some interlocutors to convince Poudel.

However, CWC members including Ram Saran Mahat, Amod Prasad Upadhyay and Shekar Koirala advised Koirala to adhere to the party's decision to pick Poudel as the party's PM candidate.

“We will wait until Monday,” said a Deuba confidante. “If the president does not remove Poudel as the PP leader until Monday, we will have no alternative but register a no-confidence motion against Poudel.”

Deuba's aides told the Post that almost 60 CA members have given the nod to remove Poudel from the PP leader.

“We wanted the president to accommodate our concerns and take a decision at the earliest. But he repeatedly failed to do so. We are running out of patience and will register a no-confidence motion against Poudel at the party's Parliamentary Committee next week,” said Dina Upadhyay.
