KATHMANDU, AUG 11 -

Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal has urged UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to make a breakthrough in the peace process before Aug 13, the deadline set by Khanal to step down.

During a meeting with Dahal in Baluwatar on Wednesday, Khanal said the coalition government will not remain if the Maoist party does not come up with a concrete proposal within two days. In response, Dahal assured Khanal that he will do all his can to forge agreement on regrouping of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) combatants. “I will do my best in taking the peace process to a logical end. Don’t worry about this matter,” PM’s press advisor Surya Thapa quoted Dahal as saying.

Soon after returning from his two-day Malaysia visit, Dahal rushed to Baluwatar to inquire about prime minister’s health and discussed the peace process. Khanal had already announced his resignation by Aug 13 if he failed to make significant progress in the peace process and constitution drafting.

“I had taken my decision to quit consulting with you. So, it depends on you either to end the peace process or abandon midway,” Khanal told Dahal during the meeting. A source close to the prime minister said that Khanal has not completely made up his mind to quit before Aug 13 if the parties theoretically forge agreement on regrouping of the PLA combatants.

In an effort to strike consensus on pre-regrouping of fighters, leaders close to Dahal and Khanal have been holding close-door discussions for the last two days. But the talks haven’t have not borne fruit mainly on how to mange rank harmonisation of the PLA combatants.

Dahal hopes for consensus govt

Dahal said that attempts will be made to form a consensus government in line with the five-point deal. It was high time for consensus, he said, “The two previous majority governments failed to take forward peace and constitution writing processes, so it is the time to form a national consensus government.” He also said the parties will move ahead in accordance with the five-point understanding. Khanal will resign at any time to pave way for a national consensus government, he said.
