Swanky Smart in solo act, graces ambience at Jawalakhel
Spread over an area of more than 16,000 sq ft on two storeys, the new department store features products ranging from groceries to kitchenware and cosmetics to garments
KATHMANDU, AUG 06 -
The more the merrier seems to be the feeling with another shopping centre throwing open its doors in Kathmandu. Smart Department Store opened its first outlet Smart Department Store at Jawalakhel on Friday. President
of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) Suraj Vaidya formally inaugurated the department store amid a programme.
Spread over an area of more than 16,000 sq ft on two storeys, the new department store features products ranging from groceries to kitchenware and cosmetics to garments. There is a separate section offering national and international liquors. “Currently, we have more than 40,000 varieties of products available with us,” said Suman Shrestha, director of Smart Department Store, adding that they would expand the inventory in the days to come.
According to Shrestha, the department store was opened with a motive to serve customers residing in Lalitpur and nearby areas. “Around 25 to 30 percent of the population of the Kathmandu Valley shop at department stores and shopping malls. More than 90 percent of the people visiting department stores buy something or the other,” said Shrestha. “This has boosted our morale and has strengthened our determination.” Smart Department Store has invested more than Rs 50 million in the venture.
In order to make shopping at Smart Department Store a pleasurable experience, it has been equipped with air conditioning, lifts and power backup. There is basement parking for the convenience of shoppers. According to Smart Department Store, customers will enjoy a world class shopping experience here.
Although the market seems to be flooded with small and big department stores at every possible location, Shrestha feels that there is need for more department stores. “The department store concept is progressing steadily in Nepal. And with the opening of more stores, the market will become more competitive and better,” said Shrestha. He added that the company was planning to promote the store in line with the concept of a chain store. “First, we will be promoting this outlet. Later, we will come up with more stores in the valley,” Shrestha said. He believes that development of the department store concept will benefit both customers and vendors.
On the occasion of its opening, the department store has offered a flat discount of 10 percent on garments, 5 percent on kitchenware and 3 percent on grocery items. The offer will be valid for 15 days.
