CC meet put off indefinitely
KATHMANDU, AUG 05 - The meeting of the Constitutional Council scheduled for making appointments to various positions lying vacant in constitutional bodies was put off indefinitely on Friday.
Various posts including the leadership in Commission for Investigations of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and Office and of the Attorney General (OAG) have been lying vacant for the past four y ears.
The wrangling between the parties over appointment has delayed appointment to constitutional bodies. The apparent reluctance on the part of big-three-party leaders to make the appointments in the vital posts has given the message that they are not serious to curb corruption.
The CC meet was expected to appoint chiefs and members of the CIAA, the Election Commission, the Public Service Commission and OAG. The next meeting of the council has been fixed yet.
Prime minister Jhala Nath Khanal, who is also the chairman of the council, announced the postponement of the meeting at the last hour. There was an understanding between the major three parties—UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML—to make appoints to the constitutional bodies after forging an agreement.
According to PM Khanal’s Press Advisor Surya Thapa, the meeting was postponed due to time constraints as the prime minister and leaders of major three parties are busy in talks relating to the peace and constitution drafting.
