Spl panel meet: Maoists agree to end dual security
Weapons to be sent to cantonment sites
KATHMANDU, AUG 05 -
The UCPN (Maoist) has agreed to end the dual security and return the remaining 32 weapons still used for the security of its hardline leaders to cantonment sites within a week.
The decision was taken on Thursday by the prime minister-led Special Committee for Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist combatants based on instructions from the Speaker Subas Nembang-led Parliamentary Committee.
The committee responsible for monitoring the implementation of the five-point agreement signed on May 29 had drawn the government’s attention to the failure to completely end the dual security system being provided to Maoist leaders.
Of the 107 combatants deployed for the security of party leaders, 62 returned to their respective cantonment sites following party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s announcement to end the arrangement in June.
The Mohan Baidya-led faction of the Maoists had retained the combatants and accused the party establishment of taking a decision in haste and without ensuring alternative security arrangements for the leaders.
Only 62 of the 97 UN registered weapons used for the security of the Maoist leaders were sent back to Shaktikhor cantonment. Of the weapons with UN stickers, three used for illegal activities have been confiscated by the police in different times.
Talking to reporters, Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal expressed commitment that the Special Committee would prepare its plan of action within a week for the completion of the peace process. The action plan would include time-bound commitment for completing different steps of integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants and a proposal on the integration modality and rehabilitation packages.
