MoFA clears air on passport forgery
KATHMANDU, AUG 02 - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Tuesday expressed concern over some media reports about passports and travel documents and asked the media fraternity to be objective while gathering news related to the same.
The MoFA also said that a probe panel led by the Joint Secretary had been formed to look into the matter, find the truth and determine how to make the distribution of passports and travel documents more reliable. “Some media reports have created a false impression among the public. Therefore, we want to clarify things in this respect,” read a statement issued by the MoFA.
“As investigation into the passport forgery and travel documents is underway and the involvement of government entities, organizations and officials or persons is yet to be ascertained, it is regrettable that some people have been blamed in the published stories,” the statement read.
MoFA also asked the media not to publish the name of officials as the probe is underway. The ministry iterated that passports and travel documents are distributed at the recommendation of the Ministry of Home fulfilling all legal requirements. “None of our officials is involved in the fake passport racket,” it said. “The officials of our ministry do not have any concern with forged documents.”
A passport can be issued on the basis of citizenship and travel documents at the recommendation of the Ministry of Home, the statement said. “If they are found fake or forged, according to the Passport Act they will be nixed.”
Some media reports have indicated officials' name in the forged passport and travel document racket and it subsequently created an uproar in the ministry. Officials at the Central Passport Office have warned that they will stop all work including issuing passports if unverified media reports continue to accuse them of any involvement in the racket.
