Golden Gate and the Prime College lifted the boy’s and girl’s title respectively for the third-time each in the final match at the Morgan Cup National Basketball Tournament at the Dashrath stadium covered hall on Tuesday.
In the girl’s final, Prime nailed the host team Morgan 49-27. The 12-9, 15-7, 11-6 and 11-5 easy win in all the quarters confirmed Prime’s title. Nayana Shakya was the lead scorer with 16 points for the winning team, while Alisha Ghale had 14 points in the win.
Earlier, Prime had bagged the title in seventh and eight editions.
In the boy’s final, runner-up of the previous edition, Golden Gate, overcame debutants Premier 83-65. In a keenly contested final, Golden Gate marched ahead with a 23-17 win in the first quarter. However, Morgan bounced back with a 17-13 and 18-17 win in the next two quarters. The decisive fourth quarter, saw the rise of Golden Gate as they dominated it taking the quarter 30-13 to grasp the title for the third time.
Rabindra Maharjan scored the game high 31 points for the wining team. His match winning performance earned him the ‘Most-Valuable Player’ award.
Bhanu Kapali, former player and coach of Golden Gate, said he was happy to win the title. “ My players played well defensively and their shooting were also good. I guess that helped them to win the national championship thrice.”
Likewise, Alisha Ghale of Prime was adjudged the MVP in the girl’s category.
Both Alisha and Rabindra bagged Rs 15,000 each and gift hampers worth Rs 10,000 Adidas for their achievement. A total of 17 teams, including 11 in the boy’s category and six in the girls, had competed in the 10-day tournament.
