New mother dies for want of treatment
DAILEKH, JUL 20 -
A woman died due to complications arising from childbirth at Dailekh District Hospital on Tuesday.
Nirupa Thapa (26) of Badakhola-1 died at the hospital for want of treatment. District Public Health Officer Dr Khagendra Shah said Thapa died of excessive bleeding after giving birth to a baby.
He said the victim would have been saved had there been a gynaecologist at the hospital.
The victim’s family members had admitted Thapa on Saturday, hoping that both the mother and the newborn would be safe. They however claimed that she died due to the negligence of the doctor and other health staff involved in her treatment.
The district hospital has been without a gynaecologist since mid-June after Dr Ramadhar Mahato left.
According to Shah, the new contract of a gynaecologist is yet to be signed. “We can’t publish vacancy announcement until the hospital receives necessary budget from the centre,” he said. The Health Ministry has been providing the necessary budget to hire a gynaecologist in the hospital.
Last year alone, six new mothers died in the district due to lack of treatment on time.
