RAUTAHAT, JUL 19 - A newly married woman was “murdered” by her in-laws apparently due to a dowry dispute at Chandranigahapur VDC-5 in Rautahat district on Sunday night.

The victim’s family said that 22-year-old Kiran Gupta was killed by her husband Gudu and mother-in-law Urmila Devi Sah over the dowry row.

Kiran’s brother Badri claimed that they killed her and later hung the body from the ceiling fan to hoodwink law enforcers. Urmila Devi, however, denied any wrongdoing and claimed that Kiran committed suicide.

A senior police officer involved in the investigation said the incident seemed to be a murder case but only postmortem report could confirm it.

Sampada Devi, the victim’s mother, said Urmila Devi exerted pressure to provide cash that was agreed upon during the betrothal as dowry. “She demanded the dowry amount at the earliest. They murdered Kiran as we failed to pay the amount,” said Sampada Devi. Gudu tied the nuptial knot with Kiran of Chandranigahapur-1some one-and-a-half-months ago.

Soon after the incident, the bride’s family, relatives and locals barged into Sah’s residence. They resorted to vandalism and accused the police of preparing

an FIR without informing the bride’s family.

Police lobbed a teargas canister to disperse the enraged crowd.

Bipin Gautam, a district-based rights activist, claimed that Kiran’s murder is the 10th dowry related murder in Rautahat within the past 16 months.

According to the agitating local people, Police Inspector Lalan Kurmi prepared the FIR without informing the victim’s family members. Bowing to locals’ protest, police prepared the report again and took the body to Birgunj-based Sub-regional Hospital for postmortem.
