KATHMANDU, JUL 18 -

Garbage collection in Kathmandu Valley has been halted for the past three days after landslide that occurred at four different places near the Sisdol-Aletar dumping site in Nuwakot district affected garbage disposal.

“Vehicles of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) carrying garbage have not been able to go to the disposal site as landslides have blocked the roads,” Rabin Man Shrestha, the environment division chief at the KMC, said.

Tonnes of solid waste have piled up on the Valley streets. According to Shrestha. About 500 tonnes of solid waste is generated in the Kathmandu valley, of which KMC collects 365 tonnes every day. The reason for the obstruction is, however, different this time around. In the past five years, the Valley saw such piles of garbage on at least 62 ocassions when locals at the landfill went up in arms with their various demands, forcing the Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre, a government body, to offer them a package of solutions.

The government has introduced the Solid Waste Management Act 2011, which authorises municipalities to penalise those who obstruct garbage collection.
