Dahal readies to bite the bullet
KATHMANDU, JUL 17 - After several delays and setbacks, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal seems to have finally made up his mind to present his political document for endorsement in the party’s Central Committee (CC) meeting scheduled for Sunday. He is also likely to give in to demands of his rivals inside the party without changing the Parliamentary party leader—a precondition to get his proposal endorsed.
Dahal sounded out party office bearers on Saturday—reading out from the document that he has prepared. The seven office bearers heard his plan to carry the peace and constitution process forward.
In his political document, Dahal has expressed readiness to allocate responsibilities to all leaders, except changing the Parliamentary Party leader. Dahal is all set to propose the name of Vice Chairman Baburam Bhattarai as the party’s candidate for the prime ministerial berth.
According to politburo member Janardan Sharma, everything is ready for internal power sharing in all posts. According to those in attendance, Dahal told party officials that peace and constitution
were his top priorities and that the internal feud was secondary. Further progress on the peace and constitution drafting fronts depends on smooth sailing of Dahal’s document and his ability to carry different factions together. It will determine the pace of progress before the Aug 31 deadline of the CA.
In his document, Dahal has sought to expedite the integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants. Dahal told office bearers that some 8,000-10,000 combatants will be integrated and that PLA will retain the leadership of the new unit, said a party insider.
Meanwhile, the office bearers’ meeting formed a task force led by Standing Committee member Dev Gurung to suggest ways to make the party’s representation in the government more inclusive. The task force will recommend the names of five persons to send in the government. The hardline faction of Maoists is urging Dahal to make inclusive representation in the government.
If the CC endorses the recommendation of the task force, the Maoists are likely to call back some ministers who have lost the election and send new faces in the government.
