KAVRE, JUL 17 - A leopard preyed on a seven-year-old girl at Devbhumi Baluwa VDC-8 in Kavre district on Friday night.

The man-eater from nearby Belapakha community forest whisked away one Salina Pandey, daughter of Narayan Pandey, from outside her residence at around 8:30 pm. She was going to the toilet, which is adjoining the house, when the beast attacked her.

 As the victim emerged from the house, the wild beast pounced on the girl and dragged her to the nearby forest. The villagers and police personnel searched high and low for the victim but to no avail.

“The girl’s half-eaten body was recovered from the nearby Junge rivulet on Saturday morning,” said Police Inspector Arun Kumar Singh.

Following the incident, the local people have been restless for the safety of their kids, cattle and of their own. The panic-stricken villagers have demanded that the man-eater be killed. The VDC is surrounded by forests.

According to the villagers, a leopard or leopards appeared in the community forest for the past few days and unleashed terror. The wild beast also preyed on some cattle.

“We are in abject terror now as the leopard started attacking humans and cattle. This is the first ever case that the leopard attacked a man in the locality,” said Bhimsen Banjara, a local inhabitant. He claimed that there would be no other option to killing the man-eater.

The villagers said that they would formally urge the District Administration Office and District Forest Office to kill the leopard. They plan to visit the district headquarters on Sunday for the purpose.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Surendra Prasad Mainali said the chief district officer has instructed the police to control the leopard terror.

“We will leave no stone unturned to contain the situation,” he assured. He said that it was also the responsibility of the forest office to ease the people’s woes.

Seven children were killed in leopard attacks in Mahendrajyoti, Nasikasthan and Ryale VDCs in the district last year.
