Civil servants clamour for salary hike
KATHMANDU, JUL 17 -
At a time when the government’s proposal to increase the salary of civil employees is drawing flak from several quarters, the civil employees on Sunday clamoured inside Singha Durbar, the central government secretariat, saying that the government did not address their demands in the fiscal budget.
UCPN (Maoist) aligned Nepal Civil Servants Association and Karmachari Milan Kendra took out a rally from the Finance Ministry and eventually staged a sit-in outside the ministry. They claimed the budget tabled at the Legislature-Parliament on Friday has not provided relief to the civil employers.
They have accused the government of, among other things, failing to adequately increase the salary and perks, making permanent to temporary staff and providing allowances for clothes.
The budget for the fiscal year 2011-12 has increased the government salary by up to 42.86 percent.
The civil servants took to the protest against “insufficient salary hike” amid growing criticisms that such a huge hike in salary of government employees might create problems by rising prices of goods in the market.
